Slime molds: what are they? They are the inspiration for sci fi movie monsters; are brainless yet capable of seemingly intelligent behavior; are not animal, plant, nor fungi; and they can be fun pets! Join naturalist, Taro Ietaka, for an exploration of these interesting and unusual organisms. We'll begin with a presentation in the gallery, followed by an adventure to find slime molds in nature. We'll make our way back to the gallery to observe our findings under a microscope and create slime-ariums for everyone to take home! Cost: $4. Max: 20 people.

Gain the knowledge and skill to develop your own herbarium and finish the course having prepared a variety of dried, mounted and labeled specimens. You'll learn how to select the best material for preservation; how to press, dry, and arrange them; how to format a good specimen label; and how to mount plants using archival materials. All materials will be provided. Cost: $50 for the whole series. Max: 11 people. PLEASE NOTE: foraging or collecting specimens for any purpose is prohibited in the Preserve. Join us for a lovely Garden Party Lunch at Rockwood Hall celebrating the Friends' ongoing endeavors since 1996 to protect and maintain the Rockefeller State Park Preserve. Funds raised by the event will go towards the revitalization of Rockwood Hall including amenities for the public and a designated entry in keeping with the location's history and landscaping. As a private home for generations, the foundation and stone gatehouse are all that remain today of what was once a grand mansion. Its spectacular Hudson River views, rare specimen trees, and proximity to the neighboring community have made it a highly popular destination. The event will be outside, under a tent.

Tickets available on May 12 at 10 am Learn about the medicinal gifts of "invasive" plants with herbalist, Clare Pierson in the conclusion of our "Edible Invasives" class series. We'll embark on a weed walk to meet these sometimes maligned plants in their natural habitat, and learn how and when to harvest them and prepare them for medicine. Afterward, we'll return to the gallery to taste some of the medicines made by Clare and learn some basic medicine-making techniques. Cost: $4. Max: 20 people.
