In search of Ephemeral Pools
Sunday, April 7, 2024 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Rockefeller State Park Preserve
Winter snowmelt and spring rains create vernal pools, temporary bodies of water, that foster new life in the forest. Certain species of frogs and salamanders rely exclusively on these habitats to breed and deposit their eggs before they evaporate in the summer. Survey one of the Preserve's vernal pools with naturalist, Josh DiPaola, during this brief, but explosive breeding period and get a close look at eggs, larvae, adults, and potential predators. This program involves a 2-mile roundtrip hike and periods of standing. Max: 15 people. Cost: $4. Parking: $6 per vehicle.

Meet the dark side of the moon, as shade covers the land and the temperature suddenly drops during one of the most awe-inspiring natural phenomena! We'll have a telescope set up for this rare and exciting event and commemorative safety glasses for the first 100 attendees to take home. The last total solar eclipse in New York was in 1925, nearly 100 years ago! The next total solar eclipse in the United States will be in 2045, but NY won't be in the path of totality again until 2079. The moon's shadow will obscure 90% of the sun in our area, with the eclipse reaching its maximum around 3:25 pm.

Wednesday, April 10, 2024 07:00 PM - 08:15 PM
Rockefeller State Park Preserve
The Hudson Valley tells a unique story of over a billion years of landscape evolution. Embark on a journey through time and learn about the geologic history of our area in this virtual presentation with Kim Fendrich hosted by Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site. Cost: FREE. Roll & Stroll: An Accessible Adventure!
Saturday, April 27, 2024 09:30 AM - 11:30 AM
Rockefeller State Park Preserve
We are thrilled to announce our first in a series of hikes that welcomes people of all abilities to explore the Preserve's trails. The terrain will be relatively level containing forest, a lake, and fields. Our carriage roads are 16 feet wide and surfaced with gravel. All-terrain devices or wheelchairs with bicycle-type wheels/tires are recommended. Standard wheelchairs should work as well but hard rubber tires can lead to a bumpier ride. We'll have two routes to choose from; either 1 or 1.5 miles in length. After the first half mile, participants can choose to round the lake and return to the Visitor's Center, or continue for another mile. There will be a hike leader with each group. Bicycles are not permitted. Max: 30 people. Cost: FREE, registration required. Parking: $6 per vehicle.
