Pinkster African Dance
Saturday, June 3, 2023 05:00 AM - 06:00 PM
Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park
Pinkster is the Dutch name for Pentecost, a religious holiday and celebration of spring where people took time to travel and visit family. In the New Netherland Colony, Pinkster was transformed into a unique Afro-Dutch celebration - a week of temporary freedom for enslaved people. Able to travel, earn money, and gather in groups, Pinkster allowed enslaved people to take a break from their endless work, see separated family members, preserve and pass on culture to the next generation, and resist enslavement; celebrate Pinkster at the Walkway with African music. At 87 Haviland Rd, Highland.

Friday, June 16, 2023 05:00 PM - 06:00 PM
Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park
Poughkeepsie, local author Jodé will discuss the latest mystery in her series, THE EMPTY KAYAK, and the true crime that served as its inspiration. The idyllic Hudson Valley has a dark underbelly—the perfect setting for murder, mayhem, and crime in fiction and reality. Millman merges the two in her award-winning "Queen City Crimes" series, proving that fiction is deadlier than true crime. About THE EMPTY KAYAK: Secrets and deceptions are uncovered as Detective Ebony Jones and Attorney Jessie Martin investigate a suspicious drowning in the murky, majestic Hudson River. But this time, the victim was someone near and dear to them both. Was it an accident, suicide or murder? Jodé Millman is the multi-award-winning author of HOOKER AVENUE and THE MIDNIGHT CALL. Her new thriller, THE EMPTY KAYAK, is available now. She's an attorney, a reviewer for Booktrib.com, the host/producer of The Backstage with the Bardavon podcast, and the creator of The Writer's Law School. Visit her website at jodemillman.com.
