Dr. Myra Armstead, Professor of Historical Studies at Bard
College, presents Free in the Spa City at the Victoria Pool House. The
emergence of Saratoga Springs as a national resort after 1820 was facilitated
by a small, but critical free, Black population. The overwhelming majority
of these African Americans were workers – some year-round and some seasonal. In
time, some were even tourists. This talk will provide an overview of the
development of this black presence in Saratoga – its labors, residential patterns,
demographic, and social rhythms. The focus will mainly be on the 19th
century. The presentation is part of NYS Parks, Recreation and
Historic Preservation's Solomon Northup "Hope Out of Darkness" statue
series. The 13-foot bronze sculpture is on display in front of the Lincoln
Bathhouse at Saratoga Spa State Park until Oct. 7, 2025. Accessibility Note: Due to its historic nature, the
Victoria Pool House has steps leading into the space. A ramp is located at the
58 Roosevelt Bar and Grill entrance, but a single stair leads into the Victoria
Pool House room.
Upon starting a job with the Bureau of Historic Sites for
NYS as a photographer, Clifford Oliver Mealy moved to Greenwich in Washington
County in 1992. He walked into the local library where he was handed a
first edition from the reference collection of 12 Years a Slave by
Solomon Northup. He could not put it down. It was then he realized he not only
didn't know anything about history, he didn't know anything about his own
history. He took up the mantle interpreting Northup and 25 years later is known
throughout the state for his thoughtful, soulful, and empathetic portrayal.
Mealy will discuss Northup's life before and after the abduction and the
lessons he has learned from becoming Solomon Northup. The presentation is part
of OPRHP's Solomon Northup "Hope Out of Darkness" statue
series. The sculpture is on display in front of the Lincoln Bathhouse at
Saratoga Spa State Park until Oct. 7, 2025. Accessibility Note: Due to its historic nature, the
Victoria Pool House has steps leading into the space. A ramp is located at the

An Ebony Hillbillies concert at Saratoga Music Hall (474
Broadway Saratoga Springs, NY 12866) is the final event of NYS Parks,
Recreation and Historic Preservation's Solomon Northup "Hope Out of
Darkness" statue series. African American string bands were an essential part
of daily life throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Its practitioners played
for pleasure, for church, and to relieve the enormous stresses of life on the
plantation. String bands served as an early melting pot for musical and creative
integration of Africans, African Americans and Native Americans, with
influences by Scottish, Irish and other European immigrants.
