Bureau of Historic Sites and Parks

The Bureau of Historic Sites and Parks provides museum and historic preservation technical support to New York’s state-owned parks and historic sites.

Established in 1972 and headquartered in a rehabilitated factory complex at Peebles Island State Park, the bureau helps safeguard New York’s rich heritage through a variety of projects and programs that document, preserve, and interpret historic, cultural, and natural resources at state parks and historic sites, including:

  • preservation, restoration, and sustainability of historic buildings, structures, and landscapes
  • conservation assessment and treatment of historic, artistic, and archival collections
  • furnishing and interpretation of state-owned historic properties
  • inventory management for hundreds of thousands of objects, manuscripts, and rare books
  • identification, documentation, preservation, and interpretation of archaeological and cultural resources
  • research, development, design, and production of exhibitions, interpretive signs, and publications

The bureau also assists nonprofit Friends organizations in various efforts to enhance and expand the programs, properties, and collections at New York’s state historic sites and historic parks.
