Invasive Species and Citizen Science Series
Saturday, September 26, 2020 09:00 AM - 11:00 AM
Grafton Lakes State Park

Do you know the plants and insects in your backyard? Do you know which ones are native, introduced, or invasive? Have you heard of the predatory fish with teeth that can walk on land? Come learn why we worry about invasive species, identify some of the invasive species in the area, and how you can help by contributing to a national database of citizen science.

Bring water, good shoes, bug spray, and if possible, install the app "iMapInvasives" onto your phone beforehand and make an account at https://imapinvasives.natureserve.org/imap/login.jsp - we will go over how to use this app during the program.

Program meeting location will be shared when you pre-register. To pre-register, email graftonlakessp@parks.ny.gov by 4:00 PM on the Wednesday before the program (9/9, 9/16, 9/23). Please be sure to include the date and program title in your email. For example, "9/12 Invasive Species Citizen Science." In your email, let us know how many people will be attending for your family and contact information

Please note that programming capacity is limited to meet COVID-19 safety requirements. Additionally, masks must be worn by all participants for the entire duration of the program. Lastly, patrons must keep social distance of 6 feet from other family groups throughout the program.

Participants must bring their own water bottle or other source of water. Depending on the group of riders we have, and past experience or ability level, I will determine the route and trails we will take that morning. Mountain biking is an inherently dangerous activity, thus this ride is an At-your-own-risk event. Participation by children is at the discretion of their parent; however a parent MUST participate as well - no exceptions. This ride is not recommended for children under 10 years old.

Sound Walk at Grafton Lakes State Park
Saturday, September 26, 2020 03:00 PM - 04:00 PM
Grafton Lakes State Park

Come join sound artist, Andrea Williams, on a soundwalk: a meditative walk that will focus on listening rather than looking. When we one starts to prioritize listening over seeing and instead of rushing to get oneself from Point A to Point B, we begin to sense more of what is directly around us. We even feel our other senses engage more intensely, such as touch and smell, and it becomes easier to appreciate the surrounding environment. There are a few listening activities along the way, but participants should be comfortable with being silent for most of the soundwalk with cell phones on silent or airplane mode. Portions of the trail may be muddy depending on weather; closed toed, watertight shoes are recommended along with bringing water to drink. We will be practicing social distancing of at least 6 ft plus wearing masks. This soundwalk is limited to 6 participants.
