Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site
Known as the "Dean of American Animal Artists," Paul Bransom
was a summer resident at Canada Lake from the end of the second decade of the
twentieth century until his death in 1979 at the age of 93. Paul's work
appeared regularly on the covers of magazines like The Saturday Evening Post,
and he provided illustrations in some forty-five books including the 1912
edition of Jack London's Call of the Wild and the 1913 edition of Kenneth
Grahame's The Wind in the Willows. My presentation will introduce his work and
his connections to what has come to be known as the Canada Lake Artists'
Colony. The work of Paul Bransom combines two of my loves. I am a
life-long summer resident of Canada Lake. My family acquired our property a
hundred years ago this month. Paul was a family friend. I am also an art
historian having done my graduate work at Cornell and having taught art history
for 33 years at SUNY-Oneonta. The Schoharie Crossing NYSMH series is hosted via WebEx

celebrate Path Through History Weekend. This tour provides access to the Aqueduct Towpath. Learn
about the history of this engineering marvel, its use on the Erie Canal, and
the preservation effort this year to save the structure for future generations. There are two chances to experience this tour, 10am and at
2pm, Sunday, October 8th. These tours are free thanks to the generous support of the
Friends of Schoharie Crossing.

"Anything Goes!" for our 2023 Not Just for Kids Storytelling event
series. Stories old, stories new, stories borrowed, stories by two!
Anything Goes! Tales to warm the cockles of your heart on a crisp fall evening.
Dee & Frank have a combined over 50 years of storytelling! With Dee's
background in theatre arts and Frank's corporate conference experience, there
is something... Frank-Lee Speaking, that makes new and refreshing tales out of
even the oldest stories when told in tandem. This is an outdoor event, though weather may send us inside.
We ask that you dress for the conditions, bug spray and sunblock are
encouraged. Bring a lawn chair or blanket as seating may be limited. Not Just for Kids Storytelling is free and open to the
community. The Friends of Schoharie Crossing is sponsoring the 2023
season, with additional support from Karen's Produce and Ice Cream.

This constantly evolving talk examines the experience of African Americans along the Erie Canal Corridor, with a particular focus on the struggle for abolition. While parts of this story are unpleasant, slavery, racism, and resistance are critical to understanding our society today. Derrick Pratt is the Director of Education & Public Programming at the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse, NY. A native of Chittenango, NY, Derrick received a B.A in Social Studies Education from SUNY Cortland and a M.A. in Museum Studies from Syracuse University. Prior to his job at the Erie Canal Museum, Derrick served as Director of Programs at Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum for 3 years. Michael will present the Schoharie Crossing program
"DeWitt's Duel: Rivalry at Ten Paces" for the Friends group after their brief
monthly meeting. The life of DeWitt Clinton is an interesting exploration
into the politics of early America and New York State. Recognized now as the
"Father of the Erie Canal," NYS governor and former mayor of New York City,
Clinton had tended to personal and political rivalries to accomplish
legislative goals. Discover some of the intrigue, wrangling, and dirty politics
that lead ultimately to DeWitt's Duel on the plains of Weehawken, New Jersey. Free and open to the public. Contact SchoharieCrossing@parks.ny.gov
