Stop by the Senate House grounds on Friday, August 22, to learn how to make your own drip candle! Candles were the primary lighting source during the 18th Century. Learning how to make and maintain candles became a very valued skill. Site staff will host a craft table on our grounds where visitors to try their hand at making their own drip candle. This family friendly drop-in activity is free and weather dependent.

Corn husk dolls were originally a Native American craft that was adopted by Europeans, and became a popular 18th century children's toy that children could make themselves. Site staff will host a craft table on our grounds where visitors to try their hand at making their own corn husk dolls. This family friendly drop-in activity is free, weather dependent and runs while supplies last.

Stop by the Senate House grounds on Friday, September 5, to enjoy a sip of tea! Tea was introduced to Britain in the early 1700's and quickly gained popularity among the British and their colonies. Tea had become such a staple in colonial homes that once the Tea Act of 1773 was placed by the British Parliament, it ended up becoming one of the contributing factors leading up to American Revolutionary War. Site staff will host a table outside on our grounds with some free samples of tea that visitors can enjoy and learn the history surrounding tea. This family friendly drop-in activity is free, weather dependent and runs while supplies last.

Stop by the Senate House grounds on Friday, September 12, and learn how to make an Apple Pomander! A pomander was an early type of aromatherapy typically made from an apple covered in cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg or even rosemary. A pomander could be worn or left out in a room. You can come and create any design and make your own pomander! This family friendly drop-in activity is free, weather dependent and runs while supplies last.

Step into the past with our free walking tour of Uptown Kingston exploring the remarkable life of Kingston-born artist John Vanderlyn (1775-1852). From his early days in Uptown Kingston, to his celebrated career as a neoclassical painter home and abroad, Vanderlyn's story is one of ambition, artistry and international acclaim. This guided tour highlights key locations tied to Vanderlyn's family, artistic development and Kingston's vibrant cultural heritage. Perfect for history lovers, art enthusiastic and curious minds of all ages. Vanderlyn walking tours will be held on Saturdays: September 13, September 20, and October 11 and on Wednesday October 15. Tours begin at the Senate House State Historic Site in front of Loughran House at 296 Fair Street, Kingston, NY. Tours will begin promptly at 11:00AM and will run approximately one hour in length. The tour will cover uneven terrain, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Tours are approximately one mile of walking distance and are weather dependent.
